 Prime Minister George Papandreou and visiting Cyprus President Demetris Christofias discussed yesterday the latest developments in the Cyprus issue following the UN chief's recent talks with Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat, in Geneva.
Papandreou and Christofias called on Turkey and the Turkish Cypriots to show a constructive approach and refrain from putting forward issues that are not part of the Cyprus reunification process, the relevant UN resolutions and the existing agreements between the leaders of the two communities on Cyprus.
The two officials further discussed energy issues in the region, in reference to the upcoming EU summit on energy policy. Papandreou stressed the two countries’ "converging interests” in this sector, adding that they "are coordinating closely on the issue of delineating sea zones."
Referring to the reported reserves of natural gas in the region he said that "we will have to wait for more details on this and any developments will follow the process that has been set up between Greece and Cyprus." Christofias also urged a low-key approach, noting that the handling of energy issues "requires more deeds than words."
