Prime Minister George Papandreou met with the Emir of Qatar Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al-Thani, on October 1 in Athens, for talks about an agreement for investment in Greece's mining sector from Qatar. The agreement -including the signing of a € 1.2 billion deal expected to create 1,500 new jobs- comes a year after a Memorandum of Cooperation was signed in September 2010 by Papandreou and Al Thani in New York.
"We have built a very strong bond of mutual respect and we are especially pleased that this bond leads to investments in our country," Papandreou said hailing the agreement. In addition, he said that Qatar’s investment shows trust in Greece’s economy, sending a clear message to the international community.
On his part, Emir Al-Thani who was accompanied by the Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of the United Arab Emirates spoke of the "confidence" he feels when collaborating with the Greek government and reaffirmed Qatar's strong interest for investments in Greece. The agreement for Qatar’s investment in the Hellas-Gold mining company in Halkidiki was signed by the Greek company’s President Dimitris Koutras and the President of Qatar Investment Fund Ahmad Al-Sayed.
