SHIFT is the new venue of the PENELOPEIA Project incorporating themes that revolve around the homonyms sift/shift. The first homonym refers to the conflicting choices between separation and retention of the familiar from the new and foreign, while the second traces the migratory move from one place, position, to another in extending the temporal scale and spatial reach. The participating artists work in paired partnerships Maria Anasazi (Greece) with Christine Clinckx (Belgium), Maria Karametou (Greece) with Berta Kolteniuk (Mexico), Sia Kyriakakos (Greece) with Ivana Cekovic (Luxembourg), and Zoe Leoudaki (Greece) with Soomin Ham (Korea). They examine some of the most striking lines of cross-cultural aesthetic research currently being produced in artistic dialogue. Their exploration of topics such as the diaspora, the cultural construction of personhood in social stratification, places their practice at the heart of the main issues of contemporary culture.
The show prepared for Flashpoint includes live and interactive performances, multimedia with sculpted works, video projections, fabric art and installations. A special event will be organized on March 18th, 2004 during the 3rd Thursday Gallery Walk (6-8pm) with live performance, artists talk and a book presentation.
The project will be accompanied by a brief catalogue reproducing the exhibited works and the book: The Power of Visual Logos, Greek Women Artists by Zoe Kosmidou, endorsed by the National Museum of Women in the Arts.
The Olympic Arts Festival 2004 is an artistic program developed by the Greek Embassy in the US to celebrate the Olympic Spirit as it is demonstrated in the works of contemporary Greek artists living in Greece and the USA in dialogue with other international artists.
FLASHPOINT is Washington’s first arts space and incubator dedicated to nurturing artists and cultural organizations by offering new opportunities to DC’s arts community and industry.
