Under the auspices of the Honorable Michael Dukakis, former Massachusetts Governor and candidate for the US Presidency the exhibition titled: Ancient Greek Masterpieces from the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston: Photographs of highlights from the MFA’s collection of Greek art was inaugurated at the Embassy of Greece on May 17th 2007.
The exhibition includes 23 photographs of the unique ancient Greek masterpieces from the Boston’s MFA Greek collection. The Museum’s holdings include objects ranging in date from the Bronze Age through the Byzantine period and in quality and breadth the collection is second only to that of the Metropolitan Museum in New York. There are now about 20,000 objects including the best ancient coin collection of any art museum in the United States.
A lecture was featured by Dr. Christine Kondoleon, George D. and Margo Behrakis Senior Curator of Greek and Roman Art, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston who shared many behind-the-scenes stories associated with the objects, and focused on their histories and their visual interest for Greek culture.
The event was attended by a large crowd. Among the distinguished guests, was astronaut Buzz Aldrin, member of the Apollo 11 expedition. The evening started with welcoming remarks by Ambassador Alexandros Mallias who concluded that “our history is our identity”. The exhibition and reception were sponsored by Nicholas and Pamela Lazares.
