The final blueprint - called Kallikratis - for a major structural reform of local administration was presented yesterday by Interior, Decentralisation and e-Governance Minister Yiannis Ragoussis during a cabinet meeting.
The reform aims at replacing the existing 76 prefectures of the country with 13 larger regions of administration, and downsizing 1,034 municipalities to between 330 and 343. It is estimated that reform will bring about a considerable reduction in red tape and operational costs, rising to €1, 8 billion annually.
Mayors and the prefects (heads of the thirteen regions) will be elected for a five-year term and as of 2014, elections for the local councils will be held in tandem with elections for the European Parliament.
