Prime Minister George Papandreou attended the 3rd annual Turkish ambassadors’ conference in Erzurum on January 7, following a formal invitation by his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
Addressing the conference, Papandreou referred to an opportunity to "speak frankly and openly about our future," and to Greece’s efforts for a future of peace and non-confrontation. In this respect, the Prime Minister touched on Greek air-space violations, and Turkey's European perspective in relation to the Cyprus issue. Earlier, the two premiers had held private talks covering a wide range of bilateral issues, including illegal immigration.
In a joint press conference following the meeting, Papandreou said that great progress has been achieved in relations between the two countries, while Erdogan stressed that "we cannot build our future on the difficulties of the past." Finally, the two Prime Ministers inaugurated the Erzurum Stadium that will host the upcoming World University Games. Source: GREEK NEWS AGENDA issued by the Secretariat Genera
