Foreign Minister at EU council focus on events in N. Africa, Middle East and the crisis in Libya
22 February, 2011

Foreign Minister Dimitris Droutsas and Alternate Foreign Minister Mariliza Xenogiannakopoulou participated in the proceedings of the EU General Affairs and Foreign Affairs Councils (GAC/FAC) that took place in Brussels yesterday.

During the meeting, Droutsas proposed the creation of a 'Democracy Centre' in Greece, an institution to help promote democracy in Middle Eastern and North African countries through the education of young politicians from the Arab World.

In the interview following the meeting, Droutsas expressed satisfaction over the decision for the EU to play an active role in the region and the agreement on a clearly defined political approach, adding that Greece had supported proposals for a comprehensive 'Marshal-type' European plan for the region.

Repatriation of Greek Citizens in Libya

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is monitoring developments in Libya and preparing to implement a plan for the repatriation of Greek citizens residing in Libya, under the coordination of Deputy Foreign Minister Dimitris Dollis and Foreign Ministry Secretary General Yannis-Alexis Zepos.

The Ministry announced that a C-130 transport aircraft provided by the Defence Ministry will carry out the operation, following consultation with the Libyan authorities, representatives of the Greek community, and Greek companies employing personnel in the country. Dollis said that the Ministry is trying to contact all of about 300 Greeks in Libya and as some of them reside in remote areas of the country, arrangements are being made for the aircraft to land in four airports to evacuate the citizens that have requested repatriation.
