The vitality, creativity and elegance of Greek designer Vlassis Holevas’ spring 2007 collection of evening wear was a feast to the eyes for guests from the nation’s capital in a show organized by the wife of the Greek Ambassador, Francoise Mallias, on November 2, in the reception halls of the Greek Embassy.
Born in Austria and raised in Athens, Greece, Mr. Holevas is representative of a new creative generation of Greek designers and artists who draw from Greece’s unique culture and aura and have the confidence to look beyond its borders. Mr. Holevas’ collection is inspired by the brilliant colors of Aegean sunsets and the texture of the Greek islands, blending them into creations that meet the aesthetic and practical needs of the modern woman. The evening was partly sponsored by Mastic Spa Cosmetics-Sodis Labs whose natural cosmetics are based on the unique elixir mastic found only on the Greek island of Chios, FAGE Total, whose thick and creamy yogurt has taken the U.S. market by storm, Demeter’s Pantry which imports authentic Greek products produced by cooperatives in Greece and the American Hellenic Institute.
The Holevas haute couture show was presented in the context of initiatives by the Embassy of Greece in Washington D.C. to provide exposure for Greek products and services. Greek wines and olive oil have also been successfully presented by the Greek Embassy as part of the «Taste of Greece” which caps a year of Greek cuisine promoted internationally via “Kerasma,” a worldwide Greek gastronomy campaign organized by the Hellenic Foreign Trade Board. “Kerasma” is currently in the midst of a New York citywide culinary festival in collaboration with 25 top New York restaurants, through November 18 (www.kerasma.gr).
