Finance Minister George Papaconstantinou is in Brussels to attend the Economic and Financial Affairs Council (January 18-19).
The ECOFIN ministers will try to reach an agreement on a number of measures aimed at improving governance in tax matters. The Council is also due to adopt conclusions on government deficit and debt statistics in Greece.
Papaconstantinou has submitted Greece’s Stability and Growth Programme to the Council which is expected to review it by the end of the month.
Following yesterday’s Eurogroup meeting, chairman Jean-Claude Juncker noted that the Programme constitutes "a first positive step towards fiscal consolidation and restoring investors’ trust.
However, it is not tough enough to secure the venture’s success on its own. […] Greece shows good will and member states should adopt a common stance in support of Greece." Source: GREEK NEWS AGENDA issued by the Secretariat Genera
