Event for the presentation of the cooperation between Greece and the Alliance of Small Island States
25 September, 2008

An event took place on Thursday, 25 September 2008, within the framework of the UN General Assembly, with the participation of the Prime Minister of Grenada, Mr. Tillman Thomas, in his capacity of representative of the Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS), and Greek Foreign Minister Ms. D. Bakoyannis, for the presentation of programmes for adaptation to climate change.

The Alliance of Small Island States consists of the island states in the Caribbean, the Pacific, the Indian Ocean and Africa. These are countries that are in the category of Small Island Developing States (SIDS), which are particularly hard hit by the consequences of climate change: extreme weather conditions as well as rising water levels.

Greece confirmed its readiness to contribute to adaptation programmes for the confrontation of climate change with one million euros in 2008. On behalf of the AOSIS, the Prime Minister of Grenada presented the course, to date, of the consultations that Grenada has undertaken for the prompt initiation of the cooperation.

The briefing took place on the day of the UN High Level Meeting on the Millennium Goals. The coincidence of these two events indicates Greece’s steadfast will to deepen its cooperation with developing countries and to contribute substantially to the joint effort of the international community to achieve the Millennium Development Goals.
