25 November, 2000

President Kostis Stephanopoulos gave a reception at the Presidential Mansion on Friday night for all who contributed to the creation of a chair by the name of "C. Karamanlis" at Taft's University in Boston.
Stephanopoulos himself had promoted the idea before he became President of the Republic. The chair will begin operating as of January 1, 2001.
Addressing his guests, President Stephanopoulos praised the work and activities of late president Constantine Karamanlis, saying that he contributed to the restoration of democracy and to the country's accession to the European Union.
The reception was attended by the President and members of the Constantine Karamanlis Foundation, main opposition New Democracy party leader Costas Karamanlis, the President of the Constantine Karamanlis Democracy Institute Yiannis Varvitsiotis, US Ambassador to Athens Nicholas Burns, Deputy Foreign Minister Grigoris Niotis and businessmen who provided financial support for endowment of the Karamanlis chair.
