A European Council to set up a permanent support mechanism for euro area countries was portrayed as a "major victory," by Prime Minister George Papandreou, on October 29.
At a press conference, following the conclusion of the EU summit, in Brussels, Papandreou also described as "unacceptable" the proposal for the suspension of member-state voting rights in the EU Councils of Ministers as part of a "penalty mechanism."
"The fight we gave was not just Greek, but a European fight as well," he said, pointing out that a suspension of voting rights would mean that a country would not have a say on important issues such as security, national defence, common agricultural policy, regional policy etc.
"This proposal deeply hurts the democratic right of EU states; and the EU has a tradition on democracy which we do not want to undermine," the premier said characteristically. Source: GREEK NEWS AGENDA issued by the Secretariat Genera
