US Asst Secretary Gordon in Athens; confers with FM Droutsas over North Africa
03 March, 2011

Recent developments in North Africa, and particularly Libya, was the main focus of discussion during a meeting of Foreign Minister Dimitris Droutsas with visiting US Assistant Secretary for European and Eurasian Affairs Philip Gordon on March 2.

Briefing reporters after the meeting, Gordon praised Greece for its contribution in dealing with the Libya crisis, especially the continuing efforts for the evacuation of thousands of third-country nationals from eastern Libya. He further noted that developments in the eastern Mediterranean have increased Greece’s geostrategic importance.

Responding to questions on the Cyprus issue, Gordon stated that direct talks between the two communities offer the "best prospects" for progress, but noted a delay in resolving issues of property and security. In reference to negotiations with FYROM, he underlined that the Greek government is committed to improving stability in the region and called for a "win-win" resolution in the name issue.
