On the sidelines of the 66th UN General Assembly taking place in New York, Foreign Minister Stavros Lambrinidis had a series of meetings with his counterparts from several countries. On September 19, Lambrinidis met with Foreign Minister of Egypt Mohamed Kamel Amr. Lambrinidis discussed with Amr issues of bilateral and regional interest, as well as current developments in the Eastern Mediterranean region. Lambrinidis accepted an invitation from Amr to visit Egypt in the near future. A Greek business delegation will also accompany Lambrinidis in his trip to Egypt for examining prospects for further cooperation in a number of sectors, including tourism, commerce, health and energy.
On September 20, Lambrinidis also held a meeting with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas. "We talked about the Palestinians’ vision of attaining internationally recognized statehood and the very delicate negotiations, […] aimed at a real resolution of the problem, meaning the creation of a Palestinian state that will live in peace and security beside an Israeli state," Lambrinidis said after his meeting with Abbas.
