PM Papademos and FinMin Venizelos at a Greek American Chamber Conference on the Economy
15 December, 2011

Addressing the 22nd Greek Economy Conference titled The time for Responsibility, Decisions & Action organized by the Greek American Chamber on December 14, Prime Minister Lucas Papademos stressed that "there will be no further reductions in nominal wages and pensions or increases in tax rates in 2012."

Yet, he ascertained that, should Greece prove unable to meet the fiscal targets, his interim government and not a future elected administration would negotiate any further austerity and reform measures.

In his intervention, Government Vice-president and Finance Minister Evangelos Venizelos reiterated that the last two EU Council decisions constitute a strategic roadmap for Greece, which mainly includes the implementation of PSI (Private Sector Involvement).

Speaking at the same event, IMF official Paul Thomsen called for more structural reforms and greater flexibility in labour relations while noting that Greece has to proceed to closing down public entities and allow the "non-voluntary departures" of staff.
