NATO's new Supreme Allied Commander, Europe (SACEUR), General James L. Jones, met Monday with Greek foreign minister George Papandreou for discussions on the changes taking place at political and military level as well as the future of the Alliance. Gen. Jones, who undertook the position of SACEUR on January 17 and the post of Commander of the United States European Command (COMUSEUCOM) the preceding day, is on his first visit to Athens in his capacity as SACEUR. According to statements to the press after their meeting, the two officials also discussed the issue of NATO enlargement and the rapidly changing conditions as the Alliance will soon number 26 member countries. Gen. Jones said that NATO was a successful alliance that was capable of responding to special situations and international challenges. Source: Athens News Agency
